Campomarino is inhabitated from a long time, in 1980 was discovered a settlement of the 9th -15th century B.C., in a place now called Arcora. Destroyed many times during its history (barbaric invasions over all), it's became an important center for Longobardic and Norman empires
Campomarino, formerly on the coast, is now two kilometers far from the sea. Near the beautyfull beach, it grows becoming an important touristic place, with high quality services and infrastructures. According to the local Turistic Bureau, the number of visitors in the summer of 1995 reach the 100000 units. The city of Campomarino is estabilished on a hill on the right of the Biferno river's mouth. The church of Santamaria a Mare is the most important of the city, it was built between the 7th and the 8th century, in romanic style. It's has been restaurated in 1710. Inside this church, apse and crypt are still the original ones. In the crypt original roman elements are been used, like some capitals with vegetable decorations. Inside the church we also find a fresco of the 400th, rapresenting Saint Nicola and Saint Demetrio (while he's fighting with a turkish) |
