.jpg) The beautyfull archipelago of Tremiti Islands, is the only one along italian east coast. It is composed by three small islands (San Domino, San Nicola and Caprara) and many rocks, whose the bigger are known as Cretaccio and La Vecchia, this two great rocks explain because Tolomeo, who called this islands "Diomedee", in his book wrote about five small islands. The name "Diomedee" derived from the Homeric eroe Diomede, who, according to the legend, arrive there after the war of Troy escaping from his home, in Argo.
Diomede, escaped from Argo, where his wife Egialea and her lover Comete, tried to kill him, arrived after a long jounrney on the Tremiti islands, and here spent, with his crew, the rest of his life. According to the legend, when he died, his crew was transformed in birds, and from that day they survay the island protecting the neverending sleep of their captain. The name According to Guglielmo Gumppenbergh, a gesuit, the name "Tremiti" derived fron the italian word "Terremoto"(=Earthquake). He thought that this archipelago was the result of a great earthquake. The storic Cocorella affirms that surely, in the ancient time, the archipelago was made by only one island with one mountain, and in a second time, by three islands and three mountains. |
